Whistler Squamish Pemberton British Columbia Fly fishing tips for September and October
As the days grow shorter and cooler, the trees begin to lose their leaves. This is a very scenic time of year with the leaves taking on there fall colors. The rivers surrounding Whistler and Pemberton, BC are at a safe wading level. We are now starting to see more Black Bears cleaning up the dead Salmon as they expire along the River banks. There are some great fly fishing opportunities this time of year in Whistler BC. As the Sockeye Salmon finish up Spawning the Coho Salmon will begin to enter the Rivers surrounding Pemberton, BC beginning in October. They have already started to enter the Squamish River and Cheakamus River in Squamish, BC. By mid October we should start seeing some Chum Salmon in the Rivers surrounding Squamish and the Lower Lillooet River South of Pemberton. Both the Chum and Coho Salmon season peaks by mid November and most Coho will expire by the end of December. Throughout the Salmon runs, Trout are still in the rivers fattening up on egg and flesh patterns. The top water action slows as the temperatures drop to near freezing Temperatures. You can expect frost in the mornings toward to end of October, so dress accordingly. Enjoy some of the best fly fishing for Salmon in British Columbia.
Fly fishing in Whistler, right now
There is a great mix of Trout in the Rivers surrounding Whistler right now. The Chinook Salmon have now expired and the Sockeye are just wrapping up their spawn. Fly fishing with both flesh and egg patterns will pay off huge for you right now. Look for Salmon that are actively spawning, the Trout will be near. Salmon will be spawning in shallower waters, while the Trout will take cover in the deeper, faster waters. Trout can not resist a well presented egg or flesh pattern in these areas.
Be careful while wading the Rivers surrounding Whistler right now, you don’t want to be walking through the spawning areas “reds”. The picture below clearly shows a spawning area. Notice the freshly worked area among the rocks that are still covered in algae and sediment. Avoid walking through these areas please.
