Great Fly Fishing in British Columbia Canada Birkenhead River
Great Fly Fishing in British Columbia Canada Birkenhead River
There are not many Rivers in the World that offer what the Birkenhead River can when it comes to fly fishing. The Birkenhead River offers year round fishing opportunities for Salmon and Trout. Trout in this river can grow in excess of 6 LBS and Salmon can topple the scale at 50 LBS. During the months of August and September, the Birkenhead River offers some of the Worlds best dry fly action. Towards the end of September we switch up and high stick egg patterns as the Sockeye begin their spawn. The Sockeye Salmon run is a sight to be seen, they come in by the thousands. While the Sockeye run is happening we regularly see Bald Eagles and Black Bears. Enjoy some of the best fly fishing in the World.
Getting to know the Birkenhead River
The Birkenhead River is located 10 minutes North of Pemberton on Portage road. Portage road offers great access to the river and there are numerous parking spots and a great network of trails. Typically, wherever there is a pull out there is a trail that will lead you into a great fly fishing spot. I always tell people, the further you get away from the highway the better the fishing will be. This being said, park your vehicle and do some walking. The river bed is mainly constructed of gravel, so the Birkenhead River is always changing and this keeps it interesting. Fly fishing spots that you have fished in the past may not be there in a matter of a week, so you will have to do a bit of exploring. You will typically see multiple fish in each and every fishing hole.
