Fly Fishing and Spin Fishing Blackwater Lake in British Columbia Canada
Fly Fishing and Spin Fishing Blackwater Lake in British Columbia Canada. Come and enjoy some of the best Fly Fishing in British Columbia Canada with the Pemberton Fish Finder. This lake is a hidden gem along the Blackwater Lake Forestry road on your way to Birkenhead Lake Provincial Park. Hidden at this time of year by the trees it’s often passed by. Located 6km on the left side of the road is the entrance to a small recreational site and a boat launch suitable for small car top boats like canoes, kayaks, stand-up paddleboards and pontoons. A boat is a must for this lake because the weed beds around the two docks on the lake are quite thick and extend pass the reach of your cast, making it almost impossible to retrieve your hook without getting snagged.
The lake contains a mix of stocked and wild Rainbow Trout (but has not been stocked in a few years). Blackwater Lake has great habitat for trout with lots of weed beds, shoals, and deep pockets all of which contribute to the production of some big fish on this relatively smaller lake. The Rainbow Trout in Blackwater Lake average 14” and the larger boys are tipping the scales at 18”-24”. If you have never seen Rainbow Trout clearing 5’ aerials out of the water before then you need to stop and spend some time out on Blackwater Lake. During June, Damsel and Dragonflies are in full flight around this lake and the Trout in Blackwater Lake have gotten a taste for them. When the sun starts to dip past the mountain tops the bug activity picks up. The Damsels and Dragonflies come out to feast over the water leaving them vulnerable to cruising Trout. This is when the show starts and it will have your head on a swivel chasing the splashes.
Spin Fishing Blackwater Lake BC
There are plenty of options for Spin Fishers but the most productive method would be slowly trolling a worm and Wedding Band. Not just any Wedding Band! Stop by Spud Valley Sporting Goods in Pemberton BC on your way up to the lake and ask for the ones they make. You can also get your worms there. This is a great way to fish with the kids and will produce lots of fish. If trolling the edges of the weed beds is not your style and you like to cast and retrieve, try working the two ends of the lake. Both ends of the lake have a good shoal dropping to a significant depth which hold larger Trout. I like to through Rooster Tails in varied sizes which all catch fish depending on the day. Start with the larger ones and work down in size until you start getting bites. One tip I’ll give you is make sure it has a bronze or gold blade. To the most part the bites are not aggressive so pay attention to your rod tip and be quick on the hook set. If your reel is lined with heavier line like 8-10lb, I suggest tying on 2’-3’ of some lighter tippet material in the 4lb range. This will really help with your strike rate. If your using Rooster Tails, make sure you use a snap swivel. Those lures will really spin up your line and create big headaches for you.
Fly Fishing Blackwater Lake BC
For the Fly Fisher, Blackwater Lake is a playground of aquatic insects. There is a significant weed bed and shoal that runs the length of the lake on one side. This side of the lake is host to Damselfly and Dragonfly Nymphs, Freshwater Scuds, Backswimmers, Leeches… almost every subsurface insect you could imagine. The other side of the lake is full of downed trees providing structure for ambush minded Trout and the middle has plenty of Chironomids hatching throughout the summer months. If nothing is hatching on the water, trolling a leech pattern on a clear intermediate sinking line like Friday Night Flies “Red Blood Leech” is a great way to find out where the Trout are cruising. After that try casting and retrieving a large Dragonfly Nymph in a dark brown color. I like to position my pontoon so that I can make my retrieve parallel to the weed bed making sure it has plenty of time to sink to the bottom first before hand twisting it in. If your into Chironomid fishing or would like to try it out, Blackwater Lake is a great place to experiment. The top end of the lake is most productive with this method of fishing (where the recreational site is located). The classic Black with White ribbed Chironomid Patters work really well in sizes 14-18. Other great Chironomid patterns are Friday Night Flies, “Turkey Wing Pad Chironomid”, “BFF Chironomid”. Most productive for me in the evenings have been an emerging pattern that sits just under the waters surface. Try patterns like Firiday Night Flies “BWO Emerger”. For more success in this method of fishing, get yourself to areas where the wind is pushing or collecting surface debris.
For the dry fly fisher, concentrate your efforts to early mornings before the sun hits the lake and in the evenings when the sun ducks past the mountain tops. Match the hatch when you start seeing the fish rising. During June and July, Adult Damsel Fly pattern must be in your box. Bigger fish will be keying in on these bits of protein as they are flying around eating the smaller flies hatching. The dry fly activity doesn’t last long so be ready for when it happens. Other patterns to have would be Friday Night Flies “FNF UV Wing” and “Adams”.
