Trophy Trout Fishing Birkenhead Lake Provincial Park
Trophy Trout Fishing Birkenhead Lake Provincial Park. Birkenhead Lake is a very special lake. You will not find a more scenic, clean and well designed Provincial park in British Columbia. There is a great trail network, picnic area and a boat launch with a well kept dock. They have just recently replaced all of there picnic tables in each campground. Birkenhead Lake provincial park is a great place to take families, there is lots for kids to do. They have a swimming area protected by buoys and plenty of shore access for fishing. The campground closes after the Thanksgiving long weekend, but the overflow campground will remain open til snow flies. At this point the gate into the park will be closed and locked.

Birkenhead Lake hold incredible year round fishing. There are 2 major creeks that feed the lake, Sockeye creek and Phelix creek. Phelix creek runs through the middle of the campround and enters the lake at the North end. Sockeye creek enters the lake half way down on the western shore. Both of these creeks have great fishing at the mouth of them. The lake is full of Kokanee, Rainbow Trout and Bull Trout. The Bull Trout are protected in this lake and are considered a trophy species. Bull Trout can reach a staggering 20 lbs in Birkenhead Lake and are easily caught. Rainbow trout are very abundant in the lake and can reach 10 lbs. Kokanee in the lake usually will not grow much larger than 12″. Most of the Kokanee in the lake are very small and are a great food source for the larger predatory Trout. This being said if you want to catch big Trout in this lake you want to resemble a wounded Kokanee. Makes sense, big fish eat little fish as the story goes. There is plenty of shoreline structure for small fish to hide. The deepest point in the lake only reaches 125′. This makes the lake easily trolled without the use of downriggers. I have had great success using willow leafs trailed by a small spoon or wedding band. My favorite lure is definitely the Fraser River Rainbow, which is only available at Spud Valley Sporting Goods ltd at 1380 Birch street in Pemberton, BC. The boys at the shop fish the lake regularly and don’t mind sharing a few local tips.
