Birkenhead River Coastal Cutthroat Fishing
Birkenhead River Coastal Cutthroat Fishing. The Birkenhead River is absolutely full of Coastal Cutthroat right now. Just last night I watched numerous schools of Cutthroat swim by me while fishing the Birkenhead River. I have not seen a Cutthroat run of this size since my childhood days, which brought me right back to those familiar days of sitting on the river with my father sharing high fives. Although there were a ton of high fives I was all business, always trying to catch more fish than my father. I always looked to my father for fishing advice and now the role has changed because I do much more fishing than he. Coastal Cutthroat are a very aggressive feeding fish which makes them a great fish for families. They travel in large groups and Very seldom do you need to set the hook on a Cutthroat because they strike wildly killing their prey on impact. Also know for their aerial acrobatic displays and in my opinion they are the pound for pound hardest fighting fish in the World.

Access to the Birkenhead River is great, there is endless River banks to fish from while the River is low. You can access the river via Portage road, if you stop by Spud Valley Sporting Goods in Pemberton, BC they will show you where to fish on a map and also help you with a great tackle selection. The Birkenhead River will start to fill with the Spring run off here toward the end of April so you will have almost a full month of Quality fishing. This time of year in the Birkenhead River you will also catch Large Rainbow Trout, Bull Trout and the odd Steelhead. The Steelhead are not massive nor are they abundant.
While fishing the Birkenhead River on the fly try using an epoxy minnow, streamers and my favorite the Magee. If you choose to use spinning gear try using small spoons, spinners and my favorite the fish Talk Zapper. The Birkenhead River has a bait ban and the use of single barbless hooks are manditory.
