Steelhead Fly Fishing Trips in Squamish BC Canada
Steelhead Fly Fishing Trips in Squamish BC Canada. As few of you know, it’s that time of year again in Squamish, BC when the wild Steelhead flood the Squamish RIver and tributaries. The Steelhead run is at it’s peak right now and should continue to be great right through to mid May. By mid May the River water levels in Squamish become unfishable due to spring run off. Spring run off is caused by the snow melt from the mountains that runs into the rivers. Spring run off is also known as the Freshet. Freshet causes the Rivers to grow in mass and become cloudy with sediment. There is a short window to enjoy quality Steelhead fishing in Squamish, BC Canada. Squamish offers great fly fishing for Steelhead in British Columbia, Canada.
Where to fly fish for Steelhead in Squamish BC
For first timers, fly fishing in Squamish for Steelhead can be a bit overwhelming. There is so much water to choose from with so little access. Rivers you want to be focusing on while Steelheading in Squamish are as follows; Mamquam River, Cheakamus River and the Squamish River. Although I will not tell you where to fish, I will tell you what to look for while Steelhead fly fishing in Squamish, BC. Look for deep pools with structure, fly fish both the head of the pool and the tail outs. Rarely will you catch Steelhead in the main body of a pool, they typically sit either at the head or the tail out.
I have also caught lots of Steelhead in transitional spots. Transitional spots consist of fast moving water in depths of 3′ – 6′ with large boulders. Boulders cause well oxygenated water and provide great ambush structure, which large fish like to lie in.

First question you should be asking yourself is “what do Steelhead eat?” Simply put, you have to do your homework. Go to the river that you intend to fly fish and look for an obvious food sources. First thing you will notice in Squamish right now is that there are Salmon fry everywhere. Salmon fry are easily imitated with the use of intruders, minute minnow, epoxy minnow, mickey finn, black egg sucking leeches and my favorite the Moto Minnow.
