Gates Lake – Ice Fishing in BC

Gates lake is one of BC’s little Jems when it comes to Ice Fishing .  I say this because there are not many lakes in BC that you can catch 8 different species of Native fish.  You ask which species, well here they are: Whitefish, Pike minnows, Bull Trout, Suckers, Kokanne, Bullheads, Rainbow Trout and Cutthroat Trout.  Cutthroat and Rainbow trout can grow to a massive 6.5lbs in this lake and are caught regularly between 2lbs and 3lbs.  The lake has Gin Clear water, a very well defined weed bed, nice shoals and steep rock faces that give you multiple options for multiple styles of Ice Fishing.  Gates Lake is one of the Best Ice fishing lakes in BC.  There is approximately 10″s of ice in the Narrow end and about 7″s at the wide end.  It is always a good habit to check the ice for yourself before going onto a frozen lake.  This time of year Gates lake receives little to no direct sunshine, so dress warm.  The wind predominantly blows from the North in the Winter months.  The Pemberton Fish Finder provides Ice Fishing tours on Gates Lake at competitive pricing.

Gates Lake – Ice Fishing in BC – Tips:  Typically Ice fisher persons fish this lake in search of Bull Trout, Rainbow Trout, Cutthroat Trout and Kokanne.  All of these fish are Predatory Fish “meaning they eat other fish”.  This being said you want to represent a bait fish, better yet a crippled Bait fish.  Not many lures or Jigs do this better than a Zapper “made by Fish Talk”.  The Zapper dips, darts, Dodges and Dives when jigged aggressively.  When jigged softly she spins, sparkles, shines and seduces Predatory fish.  Put this together, tipped with your favorite bait and BOOM! Fishing Magic.  Look in the mouth of the Rainbow trout below, you guessed right a Zapper.
