Fly fishing the Birkenhead River Good things to come
Fly fishing the Birkenhead River Good things to come
As our local river the Birkenhead, settles into its normal water flow the fishing starts to take off. In the month of August this year we are seeing some of the best water conditions this river has to offer. You can look forward to experiencing a unique British Columbian fishing experience when walk and wading this natural river system. Right now you can fish spectacular riffled runs and intimate swirling pools tinted with glacier water. Young wild Rainbow Trout are eagerly feeding on top water flies making for an exciting introduction to fly fishing for first timers. There are some big fish in the Birkenhead river. The more seasoned fly fisherman can challenge their skills by trying to encourage large Rainbow Trout out from cover.
What’s to Come
The anticipation is killing us up here in Pemberton BC. The Sockeye Salmon run is just a few weeks away and soon the Birkenhead River will run red with Salmon. The weekend angler is not the only one waiting for the salmon to hit the Birkenhead system. Both the Rainbow and Bull Trout take advantage of the Sockeye being in the river. Trout feed heavily on the freshly laid eggs as they drift along the bottom of the riverbed. This marks the best time to target larger than life Trout and they are available to both beginner and experienced fly fishers. Bull Trout being the larger of the two fish we target, can reach upwards of 8 lbs when in the river at this time and you can expect to catch Rainbow trout in the 2-4 lbs range. With the water running low and clear, its also a great time to see the epic romance that is the Pacific Salmon Run. Although the Salmon are off limits to fishing throughout most of the river system you will still be walking and wading around the areas where they spawn and there is nothing quite like seeing these fish up-close in full spawn colors. The month of September is the best time to bring the next generation of fishing enthusiast out. The river is alive with activity and the fishing can be relatively easy making a parent the hero for the day. An outing like this will leave an lasting impression.
