Coho salmon have now entered the Squamish River and surrounding tributaries in fantastic numbers and we are expecting an exceptional run. If Coho Salmon fishing in the Pacific Ocean, specifically the Georgia strait this year was an indication, we are in for a fantastic year.
Known for their aerial displays and very aggressive strikes. Anyone that has caught one will tell you that they leave everything on the line, holding nothing back. This year, we have the opportunity of retention. You are allowed to keep 1 hatchery Coho Salmon, per day. Our Coho range in size from 6 – 20lbs
Coho Salmon fishing guides in Squamish BC
Coho Salmon provide an exceptional fishing experience, for both fly fishing and spin fishing, throughout the months of September through end of December. The Coho Salmon Run Peaks mid November. At this time, most rivers in Squamish are also overrun by chum salmon. Although, we are not allowed to target Chum Salmon, they do eat the same flies and spoons as Coho Salmon. Upon catching a Chum, they must be released immediately.
Above all, let’s not forget about the migratory and Resident bull trout that follow these shiny salmon in search of their tasty treats left behind in the form of spawn. There are also a healthy population of Rainbow Trout and Coastal Cutthroat Trout. As much as they typically feed heavily on spawn, they will also feed on the flies we use for Coho Salmon, this keeps it very interesting. In short, it is not uncommon to catch multiple species through a day of fly fishing or spin fishing in Squamish, BC Canada.
Great Wildlife viewing opportunities
During the months of October and November there are great opportunities for wildlife viewing in the form of Black bears, Eagles, Great blue heron and Elk. While Black bear sightings are common, bears solely focus on ingesting salmon before the long winter hibernation. Furthermore, all of our fishing guides carry bear spray for added safety and peace of mind.
