There are few fish that look as colorful as a Brook Trout.\u00a0 Combine that with their vigorous fighting abilities, aggressive feeding patterns and you will have an incredible sport fish to target while Fly fishing.\u00a0 In the secret lake we fly fish for Brook Trout it is not uncommon to see fish over 5 LBS each and everyday.\u00a0 The shoreline is alive with Scuds, Dragonfly Nymphs, Damselfly Nymphs, tadpoles, Chironomids\u00a0 and Water boatmen.\u00a0 It’s like a Smorgasbord for trout and when it comes to fly fishing its tough to make a mistake when matching the hatch.\u00a0 There is just that much to choose from.<\/p>\n

Fly fishing for Brook Trout in BC<\/h2>\n

I personally love stripping large Nymphs when Fly Fishing for Brook Trout.\u00a0 When Trout take a Nymph, it seems as if they are trying to kill it on impact.\u00a0 This can account for some extreme strikes.\u00a0 Strikes that if you are not holding on to your fly rod firmly could separate you from it.\u00a0 \u00a0On impact, Brook Trout are known for large runs that seem endless at times.\u00a0 Once close to your boat they put on an aerial display, leaving everything on the line.\u00a0 Some of my fondest memories of Fly Fishing are of chasing these very Brook Trout on light lines.\u00a0 It is\u00a0quite a feat to land these magnificent fish on either a 3 wt or 4 wt fly rod and line.<\/p>\n

The Brook Trout in the picture above is roughly 24″ in length and weighed\u00a0approximately 5 1\/2 pounds.\u00a0 I hooked another fish similar in size and it shook the hook as I extended my net.\u00a0 \u00a0Although this was the largest fish I landed this day we were only at this lake for 2 hours.\u00a0 We caught lots of smaller Brook Trout ranging in size from 14″ – 18″ with an average weight of 1.5 – 2 LBS.\u00a0 Brook Trout can reach a staggering 8 LBS in this lake.\u00a0 This being said there is a healthy population of up and comer Brook Trout for years to come.\u00a0 Combine a healthy population of fish with a great food source and that is a recipe for Massive Brook Trout.<\/p>\n
