Birkenhead River Best fly fishing Whistler BC. \u00a0Right now the Birkenhead River is fly fishing the best I have seen in years. \u00a0There are lots of Sockeye Salmon and Chinook Salmon Spawning, leaving lots of tasty treats behind for the Trout. \u00a0Although there is no fishing for Salmon in the Birkenhead River, there are Salmon sized Trout. \u00a0Rainbow Trout and Bull Trout are the\u00a0predominant species of sport fish in the Birkenhead River this time of year. \u00a0Mountain Whitefish and suckers also reside in the river. \u00a0All of the species listed can be fooled easily with a well presented egg pattern while fly fishing. \u00a0In a few more weeks flesh flies will work very well as the Salmon start to break down as\u00a0they are done spawning. \u00a0We are now starting to see Chinook Salmon that have expired start to wash up on the shorelines. \u00a0With the Salmon washing up on the Shorelines, you will begin to see a lot more Bald Eagles and Black Bears wondering the River in hopes of a free meal. \u00a0For this reason we always suggest that you carry Bear Spray if you intend to fish the Birkenhead River. \u00a0Bear Spray is available at Spud Valley Sporting Goods Ltd. at 1380 Birch street in downtown Pemberton, BC. \u00a0It is always exciting to see Black Bears with our clients while fly fishing the Birkenhead River. \u00a0They are typically not interested in what we are doing and they carry on there Mosey way. \u00a0Clients are eager to snap a quick picture then back to fishing.<\/p>\n

To fly fish an egg pattern correctly one should start by using a floating line. \u00a0I always suggest a tippet strength of no less than 4 Lbs when fly fishing the Birkenhead River because there are large trout and a strong current. \u00a0I like to use either 5 LB or 6 Lb tippet this also helps with the abrasion being that an egg pattern if fished properly spends most of its time bouncing along the bottom. \u00a0If your egg pattern is not bouncing along the bottom, you will not catch fish. \u00a0The use of a strike indicator and micro split shot is necessary to keep your egg pattern along the bottom. \u00a0The strike indicator will help you differentiate between dragging bottom and a strike. \u00a0Typically if your strike indicator goes down slowly this means you are hung up on bottom and if it goes down sharply you have had a bite or there is a fish on. \u00a0A good rule of thumb when setting your strike indicator is to set it at a depth of 1.5 times the depth of the river that you are fishing. \u00a0Present your egg pattern in a dead drift with zero swing. \u00a0If there is swing in your drift you may catch fish but I assure you that it will work much better without the swing. \u00a0The split shot size that we have been using is size BB, depending on the flow we have been using between 2 – 4 split shot.<\/p>\n
