Fly fishing Birkenhead River in Pemberton British Columbia. \u00a0The Birkenhead River holds some of the best fly fishing in British Columbia, Canada and the World. \u00a0During the month of May the River has a heavy influence of spring run off. \u00a0The spring run off is caused by the melting snow in the mountains. \u00a0This keeps the water very cold, well oxygenated and it also washes a ton of feed into the water. \u00a0Feed in the form of black ants, stonefly nymphs and case caddis. \u00a0During the month of May expect to catch Rainbow Trout, Coastal Cutthroat Trout, Whitefish and Bull Trout. \u00a0Although the main stem of the Birkenhead River is very high and swift, it will hold fish. \u00a0What we would suggest is for people to fish the side channels, we have found this to be a much safer alternative to fishing the main stem of the river. \u00a0The side channels branch off into much smaller less swift and wadeable sections that carry a ton of structure, structure that hosts great hiding for Salmon fry and a wide variety of aquatic Nymphs. \u00a0The Month of May also triggers great dry fly fishing. \u00a0The days become much longer and warmer. \u00a0We have found that as soon as the sun sets behind the mountains in the evenings the Birkenhead River comes to life with many hatches, hatches that include sedges,\u00a0black gnats, caddis and of course the Mayfly.<\/p>\n

The Birkenhead River is located 15 minutes North of Pemberton on Portage road. \u00a0Follow the signs North toward the village of D’arcy once you leave Pemberton. \u00a0The River is well marked on the Bridge that crosses it. \u00a0Once you cross the bridge the Birkenhead River is on your left, pretty well anywhere you see a pull out there is a trail that will take you down to the River. \u00a0We always recommend that you carry bear spray while fishing the Birkenhead River because it is common to run into bears throughout the day. \u00a0Although there has never been a recorded Bear attack on the River, bear spray is an inexpensive piece of mind. \u00a0Bear spray and all of your fly fishing needs are available at Spud Valley Sporting Goods Ltd<\/a>. in Pemberton, BC at 1380 Birch Street. \u00a0The sportshop is well stocked with all of your fishing needs, they have a great map on the counter and their staff can help you pick out some flies for fly fishing that are working.<\/p>\n

Later on My local knowledge and ability to help people catch fish would come in handy. Soon I ventured away from the family business to work as a angling guide for 5 years. In those 5 years I stared in my own fishing show called ELITE FISHING which was seen by 100,000 people a week on Whistler Cable. I have made a name for myself as the man to see if you want to catch fish. In 1976 My Father \"Ivan Knowles\" opened Spud Valley Sporting Goods Ltd, and how fitting he had his two boys running the shop who were both very avid in hunting, camping and most of all ... fishing. Everyday people from all over the World would come in and get the local scoop, buy their gear and be off to catch fish. Later on My local knowledge and ability to help people catch fish would come in handy. Soon I ventured away from the family business to work as a angling guide for 5 years. In those 5 years I stared in my own fishing show called ELITE FISHING which was seen by 100,000 people a week on Whistler Cable. I have made a name for myself as the man to see if you want to catch fish. Now back working at Spud Valley Sporting Goods Ltd, \"The Family Business\", I love working with my brother Sheridan and father Ivan. Also a proud member of the fisheries committee for Pemberton Wildlife Association - helping make local decisions on local fisheries.
