To be honest with you, I am a bit new to fishing Alta Lake in Whistler BC. \u00a0Typically, I chase Giant Trout in Pemberton, BC on the larger lakes with my boats but, I had a couple larger corporate groups that wanted to stay in Whistler and fish from a boat. \u00a0This being said, there are only a couple options for boat launches in Whistler. \u00a0You have two options; either Green Lake or Alta Lake.\u00a0 While doing my homework I found the Trolling on Green lake to be a bit slow “Not up to Fish Finder standards”. \u00a0So we loaded up the boat and went over to Alta Lake. \u00a0I am so glad we did! \u00a0We made a few laps around Alta lake to find the structure and areas to key in on. \u00a0Then we started experimenting with different color patterns and trolling speeds. \u00a0After a couple days of this, we got Alta Lake dialed in. \u00a0We were averaging 5 fish a lap, pretty good for any lake in British Columbia.<\/p>\n

I was pleasantly surprised at the size of the Cutthroat Trout in Alta Lake. \u00a0Alta Lake has some of the best fishing for Rainbow Trout, Cutthroat Trout and Bull Trout in Whistler, BC. \u00a0Cutthroat are easily caught in Alta Lake by means of trolling either flies or small spoons. \u00a0The use of barbless hooks are mandatory and bait is not allowed either. \u00a0Alta Lake is relatively shallow and\u00a0at the deepest point it is 62 feet deep. \u00a0Most of the lake averages between 20′ – 30′ in depth and it has a well defined ledge at 30′. \u00a0Look for this ledge, troll between 2 – 2.5 MPH, use a small spoon with a 1 OZ weight and you will produce Trophy Cutthroat Trout. \u00a0A picture of the\u00a0spoons that worked the best for us are below. \u00a0The reason these spoons work so well is because Alta lake is absolutely full of Stickleback. \u00a0The Stickleback is a small invasive species that looks very similar to that of a perch (Farthest lure on the right in the picture below). In order to control the abundance of this invasive species, they introduced cutthroat trout into the lake which began feeding heavily on these little guys. All of these spoons are available at\u00a0Spud Valley Sporting Goods Ltd<\/a> in Pemberton, BC at 1380 Birch Street. \u00a0Pemberton is a short, scenic 25 minute drive North of Whistler.<\/p>\n

In 1976 My Father \"Ivan Knowles\" opened Spud Valley Sporting Goods Ltd, and how fitting he had his two boys running the shop who were both very avid in hunting, camping and most of all ... fishing. Everyday people from all over the World would come in and get the local scoop, buy their gear and be off to catch fish. Later on My local knowledge and ability to help people catch fish would come in handy. Soon I ventured away from the family business to work as a angling guide for 5 years. In those 5 years I stared in my own fishing show called ELITE FISHING which was seen by 100,000 people a week on Whistler Cable. I have made a name for myself as the man to see if you want to catch fish. Now back working at Spud Valley Sporting Goods Ltd, \"The Family Business\", I love working with my brother Sheridan and father Ivan. Also a proud member of the fisheries committee for Pemberton Wildlife Association - helping make local decisions on local fisheries.
