Report: \u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

Birkenhead River Fly Fishing<\/a> at its Best. \u00a0The Birkenhead River is one of prettiest rivers in BC to drown your nymphs. And April can be a special month. The air is clean and crisp, the salmon fry are beginning to emerge from the rocks and water conditions are fantastic as the freshet hasn\u2019t yet begun. \u00a0At this time of year, the river will hold beautiful Rainbow Trout, Bull Trout and one of my favorite fish to target the Coastal Cutthroat Trout. \u00a0We arrived at the river around 9:00am after a long drive up from the lower mainland. We geared up and began our pilgrimage downstream noting multiple prime lies to tumble our nymphs through. We were entertained along the way by a river otter surfing the current downstream to his hunting grounds. \u00a0We finally arrived at our starting destination, crossed the river to position ourselves better and strung together our 11ft 4wt Czech Nymph rods. The flies we used were our own hand tied custom flies. They are heavily weighted and tied on competition jig hooks with tungsten beads. This allows us to get the flies down to the correct zone quickly. The hook point rides upward too which helps to limit snags and the dulling of the hook point. \u00a0With rod in hand, we kept low to avoid being seen in the low clear water conditions and fished our way into position to target the first prime lie. But fortunately for us, it didn\u2019t take that long.\u00a0 Once again fishing our way into the water paid off. It never ceases to amaze me how camouflaged a trout is when sitting on bottom.\u00a0 The first to hand was a beautiful Rainbow sitting in 4 feet of water and about 10 feet from where I was crouched. \u00a0\u00a0As the day progressed, the action continued and my son joined in on the fun. \u00a0\u00a0All in all, a great day of angling spent on a pristine BC river with one my favorite fishing buddies. As a young boy, the small town of Pemberton didn't offer the youth many things other than great fishing. So every waking moment I would be seen fishing the local rivers and lakes on a daily basis. In 1976 My Father \"Ivan Knowles\" opened Spud Valley Sporting Goods Ltd, and how fitting he had his two boys running the shop who were both very avid in hunting, camping and most of all ... fishing. Everyday people from all over the World would come in and get the local scoop, buy their gear and be off to catch fish. Later on My local knowledge and ability to help people catch fish would come in handy. Soon I ventured away from the family business to work as a angling guide for 5 years. In those 5 years I stared in my own fishing show called ELITE FISHING which was seen by 100,000 people a week on Whistler Cable. I have made a name for myself as the man to see if you want to catch fish. Now back working at Spud Valley Sporting Goods Ltd, \"The Family Business\", I love working with my brother Sheridan and father Ivan. Also a proud member of the fisheries committee for Pemberton Wildlife Association - helping make local decisions on local fisheries.
